Salt Lake City Fault Line and Earthquake Risk

Salt Lake City sits between two active fault systems. The Salt Lake City segment of the Wasatch Fault runs along the east bench, and the West Valley fault zone crosses the valley floor to the west.

Research puts the Salt Lake City segment's last large surface-rupturing earthquake 1,200 to 1,600 years ago. The 2020 Magna earthquake, about 16 km (10 miles) west of downtown, is linked by several studies to this same segment deep underground.
